Replacing Gas Ducted Heating with Electric Ducted Heating

Kitchen with square ceiling vents for home ducted, air conditioning system

Looking to replace your Gas Ducted Heating with Electric Ducted Heating?

With gas prices rising and electricity becoming a more sustainable and affordable option, a question we are frequently asked is: “What is the electric replacement for Gas Ducted Heating?”

Let’s explore your options…

What is the Electric replacement for Gas Ducted Heating?

Ducted Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning is the electric replacement for gas ducted heating. A perk of this system is it both heats & cools, making it suitable for year-round use.

Can you convert Gas Ducted Heating to Electric?

No, Gas Ducted Heaters cannot be modified to use electricity.

You will need to replace the Gas Ducted Heating unit with a Ducted Reverse Cycle system, which is also referred to as a Ducted Split System, as its comprised of 2 parts – an indoor unit which works in conjunction with an outdoor compressor unit.

However, if you have a Brivis Add On Cooler, you can now turn that into an electric ducted heater!

While you cannot convert a Gas Ducted Heater to electric, Brivis have released a new product which allows your Add On Cooler to produce both electric heating and cooling. It does of course require you to have both a Brivis Gas Ducted Heater and Brivis Add On Cooler. Check out our Brivis SmartSens page for more information.

Can Electric Heating use the same ducts as my Gas Ducted Heating?

In the majority of cases, you will need to update your ducts. As part of our site assessment, our technicians will be able to let you know.

Circumstances where you may not need to replace them include:

  1. If you currently have Add On Refrigerated Cooling installed
  2. If you are installing a Ducted Reverse Cycle system predominantly for heating – eg. you have an Evaporative Cooler you will continue to use – then we have an option which may be suitable, ask our friendly staff

Another thing to consider is the age of your ducts. Gas Ducted Heating has been a popular home heating choice in Geelong, Ballarat and Melbourne homes for a long time, so some duct systems are old. With age, the ducts can de-laminate, collapse or may not have a modern insulation rating, meaning you loose heat on the way to your rooms.

We use R1.5 ducts, which are insulated to minimize heating/cooling loss, so while installing new ducts will add to your overall cost, it can save you on running costs in the long run.

What are the benefits of installing Ducted Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning?

Government Rebates

Rebates for replacing your Gas Ducted Heater with electric ducted heating are now available.

Runs on Electricity

With natural gas prices continuing to rise across Victoria, and more homes now powered by rooftop solar (or planning to be), switching to electric heating and cooling simply makes sense for a lot of people.

Save on Servicing & Repairs

Most people with Gas Ducted Heating have an additional source of cooling such as Evaporative Cooling, Add On Cooling or a wall Split system, so they require more than 1 unit to be serviced and repaired.

Ducted Reverse Cycle units are all-in-1 so only the 1 unit needs attending to.

Refrigerated Cooling

Ducted Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners feature Refrigerated Cooling, which gives you precise control over the temperature in the room. This is opposed to Evaporative Coolers which – while they are cheap to run – aren’t designed for humid days, or allow for precise control of the temperature.

Improved, More Affordable Technology

With many countries around the world racing towards renewable energy, along with it has come a focus on improved and more affordable technology which utilizes electricity.

What this means for the home heating and cooling industry is more energy efficient, competitively priced air conditioning systems.

Can you install ducted systems into double story houses?

Yes, it’s possible to install a ducted system into a double story house in the majority of cases.

Our staff will be able to advise if your particular house design allows for a ducted system.

Can you remove my Gas Ducted Heater and replace it with a Ducted Reverse Cycle Air Conditioner?

Absolutely!

We will even dispose of your old unit and take care of applying for the Victorian Government Rebate, which can save you thousands of dollars!

What is the Victorian Government Rebate?

Currently, the Victorian Government is encouraging homeowners to upgrade their gas heating to electric via a rebate through the Victorian Energy Upgrade program (VEU).

There are 2 air conditioning rebates –

  1. If you have a Gas Space Heater, you will get a rebate for replacing it with a wall-mounted Split System.
  2. If you have a Gas Ducted Heater, you will get a rebate for replacing it with a Ducted Reverse Cycle Air Conditioner.

The rebate amount can vary depending on what area you live in and what brand and model you install. Only certain brands and models which have met certain efficiency criteria are eligible for the rebate, and certain conditions have to be met by the installation company
