Why Install a Storage Tank Hot Water System?
Gas & Electric Tank Hot Water Systems
Tank Storage Hot Water systems have been around for years and have proven to be reliable and durable.
Hot Water Tank systems are also known as Hot Water Cylinders, Water Heaters and Hot Water Storage systems.
They are currently the most common type of Hot Water System in Australia as they are economical to install.
As they come in a range of different sizes, you need to consider how many bathrooms are and how many people live there in order to select the one which is right for your house.
Tank hot water systems utilise either a Gas burner or Electric element to heat the water stored in the tank, ready for use.
As they keep water heated day and night, they are the least economical hot water system to run.
Natural Gas Tank Hot Water systems are much cheaper to run compared to Electric Tank Hot Water systems.
We do not recommend utilising LPG for Gas Tank Hot Water systems due to the high running cost.
Hot Water Storage Tank systems were once the most popular system on the market and are still a common type of water heater today.
While Electric and Gas Storage Tanks are available to buy, most Electric models have been replaced over the years with Natural Gas models which are much cheaper to run.
Many people with Gas Storage Tanks are now upgrading to Instantaneous Natural Gas systems, as they are just as cost effective to install and replace and have lower running costs.
But Hot Water Storage Tank systems still have their place, benefits of installing this type of system include:
- Cost effective to install
- They are quick to replace in case of a breakdown
- Durable, with most manufacturers offering 8-10 year warranty on the tank
- Come in a variety of sizes to suit different household needs

Factors to consider when decided whether to repair or replace include:
- Your budget
- The running costs of your current hot water system
- How old it is
- What it is made of -Stainless steel tanks, which more expensive to purchase but lasts longer than Enamel tanks
- The capacity of your current system vs your household requirements
- And of course, if it is possible to repair – some issues such as a split in the tank are not repairable.

Gas Hot Water Systems
Natural Gas Hot Water Tank Systems are cost effective to install and replace.
The modern 5 star energy rated models are much more energy efficient to run than older models.
Electric Hot Water Systems
Electric Hot Water Tank systems are much more expensive to run than ones which run on Natural Gas.
If you have access to off-peak electricity tariffs, it is strongly recommended you organise with your energy company to use off-peak tariffs for your electric hot water system.
Due to the amount of electricity they use, those with home rooftop Solar Photovolatic (PV) panels will only see very limited benefits on sunny days when they are not running too many other appliances. If you have Solar panels and are looking to offset your hot water running costs, check out Heat Pump Hot Water.
