Making the change from Evaporative to Refrigerated

Summers in Geelong & Melbourne can be extreme, with hot dry days which are ideal for Evaporative Cooling. Known for their affordability and energy efficiency, they have been a poplar choice.

However, many homeowners are now opting to replace their evaporative cooler systems with refrigerated cooling for greater comfort and climate control.

In this blog, we’ll explore why switching to refrigerated cooling might be the best option for your home and factors you need to consider…

Why change from Evaporative Cooling to Refrigerated?

The main reasons our customers tell us they are ready to move away from Evaporative Cooling include:

1. Consistent Cooling in Any Weather (including humid days!)

Evaporative coolers work by using water to cool the air, which means their effectiveness drops significantly in humid conditions, as the evaporation process cannot take place. In contrast, refrigerated air conditioning provides consistent cooling regardless of humidity levels.

2. Better Temperature Control

Refrigerated systems allow you to set your desired temperature, giving you precise control over your indoor temperature. Evaporative coolers, on the other hand, rely on outdoor conditions and airflow, making it harder to maintain a stable indoor temperature.

3. Improved Air & Noise Quality

Evaporative cooling systems require open windows for airflow, which can be an issue if you live in a built up area with noise and traffic pollution. Refrigerated air conditioning operates in a sealed environment with filters that remove dust and pollutants.

4. Higher Home Value

Many homebuyers in Australia prefer refrigerated cooling due to its efficiency and reliability. Upgrading to a refrigerated system can increase the value of your property and make it more appealing to potential buyers.

Can I convert my Evaporative Cooling to Refrigerated?

As Evaporative Coolers and Refrigerated Cooling operate in completely different ways, there is no way of converting them.

Sidenote on how they work: While Evaporative Coolers sit on your roof top and use a giant fan to draw in fresh air, Refrigerated Coolers are a 2 part system, with 1 part located inside and the other located outside and a refrigerant gas which runs between them.

So what you need to do is replace the Evaporative Cooler. Lets look at your options…

Refrigerated Cooling options for your home

There are different types of refrigerated cooling systems to consider. For more information on each of the products, click on the blue text.

What to Consider When Replacing Evaporative Cooling with Refrigerated Cooling

1. What rooms need refrigerated cooling?

If it’s just a couple of rooms, for example your bedroom and a living room, which need cooling, you might consider a couple of Split Systems as they are cheaper than ducted systems.

2. Energy Consumption

Refrigerated cooling uses more electricity than evaporative cooling. However, modern energy-efficient models, zoning systems, and modern inverter technology can help reduce running costs.

3. Installation Costs

The cost of installing a refrigerated air conditioning system depends on factors such as the size of your home, existing ductwork, and the type of system you choose.

Wall split system air conditioners are very energy efficient and budget friendly to install. Some people choose to keep their Evaporative Cooler and install a split system in a bedroom or living area for those hot and humid days.

If you choose a ducted system – Ducted Reverse Cycle or Add On Cooling – the ductwork used for evaporative cooling is different from what’s required for refrigerated air conditioning, so new ducts will be required, which will add to the overall cost.

While the initial investment for a ducted system is higher than a wall split system, the long-term benefits in comfort and efficiency of having 1 electric heating and cooling system for your whole home often outweigh the costs.

Making the Switch

Step 1: Consider your budget & refrigerated cooling needs

Would you like to supplement your Evaporative Cooling with a Split System, or replace it entirely with a Ducted Refrigerated Cooling system?

Step 2: Obtain professional advice & quotes

Consult a qualified and experienced heating and cooling company. They will advise you what is best for your house, needs and budget and can provide different quote options.

Step 3: Installation of Refrigerated Cooling

The new system, including the indoor and outdoor units, ducts, and vents, will be installed. The technician will ensure the system is optimized for efficiency and performance.

Step 4: Removal of Evaporative Cooler & Ductwork

Your options when it come to removing your Evaporative Cooling system include:

  • We can remove both the Evaporative Cooler and ductwork and will cap the roof with a weather-tight metal plate. If you have a tiled roof and spare roof tiles, we can re-install them for you.
  • Remove ductwork and disconnect Evaporative Cooler unit. Some people opt to just leave the Evaporative Cooler on their roof rather than replace it with a metal plate.

Step 5: Testing & Teaching

Once installed, the system will be tested to ensure it operates efficiently. Our technician will show you how to use it and advise on regular maintenance, such as cleaning filters and servicing the unit to keep it running smoothly.

Is It Time to Upgrade?

If your current evaporative cooling system isn’t providing the comfort you need, upgrading to refrigerated cooling is a smart investment. With improved climate control, better air quality, and year-round comfort, it’s a choice that enhances both your lifestyle and your home’s value.
