Re-lighting your Gas Hot Water Tank System

Is your hot water coming out of your tap cold?

If you have a Gas Hot Water Tank, before calling a plumber, you can first check if the pilot light has gone out.

You do this by:

  • Go to your hot water tank, find the access panel and open the flap. There may be instructions on the flap on how to re-light, if not read on…
  • Turn the gas knob “off”. Wait at least 5 mins for unused gas to dissipate.
  • After 5 mins, turn the know to the pilot position (instead of saying pilot, it might have a flame symbol)
  • Locate the ignition button (may be a small red button you can push)
  • While pressing the knob down, press the ignition button until the pilot light comes on. You might have to repeatedly press the ignition button for it to work.
  • Once the pilot light comes on, keep holding the knob for another 20-30 seconds.
  • If it goes out, try the process again.

Hopefully this works! But if you find your pilot light is repeatedly going out, you will need to book a plumber to assess.
